Executive Director of GNEC
Greater Newark Enterprises Corporation(GNEC) announced on June 8, 2020 that Victor Salama will be the new Executive Director, succeeding Steven Gomez who has left to take a full-time position at the NJIT Martin Tuchman School of Management.
GNEC was created in 2005 as a community development corporation and Certified Community Development Financial Institution. The organization helps entrepreneurs in the Greater Newark region access training and finances. Under Steven Gomez’s dedicated leadership, the organization built on its strengths, developed new relationships and strengthened existing relationships with partners and supporters. GNEC anticipates that Victor Salama will leverage these achievements to help the organization expand its services to even more entrepreneurs in the greater Newark region as the country, state and region re-open from the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We are very excited to have Victor taking on the role of the executive director of GNEC” says Judith Sheft, the Board Chair. “Victor brings to the job an exceptional combination of energy, sensitivity, and proven leadership to the challenges of working with entrepreneurs and small businesses. We are impressed with his extensive knowledge of entrepreneurship and the non-profit space, and his strong management and fund-raising skills. We expect Victor to not only continue the GNECs excellent programs, but to work with partners and funders to help expand the GNEC’s programs to more businesses in need in these challenging.”
Victor Salama joins GNEC after a long career as an entrepreneur, entrepreneur educator and non-profit leader. Most recently Victor led First Friends of NJ & NY, a nonprofit supporting immigrants detained by ICE at four northern NJ jail. He also worked with the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) and the United Nations. As an entrepreneur he ran a food importing and distribution business.
“I am honored and thrilled to be joining GNEC as its new Executive Director. GNEC has an outstanding mission-driven staff, a dedicated Board of Directors and has built a tremendous reputation as an impactful Community Development Financial Institution. I am excited to jump in and build upon the work that Steven Gomez and the team has undertaken in the Greater Newark region.”

Greetings My Friends,
Former Executive Director of GNEC
I hope that this email finds you and yours well. I come to you in these last hours of my current role and wanted to share with you my thoughts and gratitude. Our lives these past few months have been turned upside down and we find ourselves more often than we should in places of isolation, anxiety, and uncertainty. However, in spite of it all, we persist. Though we may move at different paces and are faced with unique roles, circumstances. and environments, the important thing is to always keep moving. In reflecting on this idea of movement and movements, I was reminded of a quote that I wanted to share:
If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.
– Martin Luther King, Jr.
I think this idea of movement in the face of all that life throws at us remains at the heart of what GNEC is and what GNEC does. Though the path forward has not always been clear, we keep moving. Though our lives have been thrown into turmoil, we move forward. Through times of change and transition, we move forward. And through times of celebration, we move forward. This ability to move defines our spirit and is what we look to invest into those around us, those we work with, and those we serve. Movement is captured in the entrepreneurial spirit and it both draws us toward new ideas and new opportunities and it is what pushes us to keep trying no matter how many times we may fall. I have learned many things during my time at GNEC, but the greatest lessons have come from all of you, in seeing how no matter what comes, you rise and keep moving forward.
For the past 7 years that I have held the title of Executive Director, I have always viewed my role as one of service and support in you my colleagues and I thank you for every day and minute that I have been able to do just that. Change and transition are constant and are always met with some combination of trepidation and excitement. I am grateful for what I have, what we have done together, and am excited for what is to come. So long as our entrepreneurial spirit endures to keep us moving and our faith in each other remains, great things will come. I am excited to see what is next for GNEC. We are no strangers to challenges, but we have proven our might and resolve and will continue to do so with vigor and passion.
This is not goodbye by any stretch as every day brings with it new beginnings and new opportunities and I am excited to see what we will continue to do together. Victor, you will not find people with deeper hearts, stronger resolve, and brighter passion than those here at GNEC. I look forward to working with you as we continue to move forward. I will see you all soon. In the meantime. Go easy and always move forward with love, faith, and kindness in your hearts.
